My Story – Part 1

Since my early years, I have always been passionate and driven towards sport and fitness. This was embraced in my studies at Birmingham University completing a Sports and Exercise Science BSc. I was amazed even, as far back at as the mid 90’s how diverse this sector could be.

Over the next 7 years, I had the opportunity to work with a leading Health and Fitness operator, Holmes Place Health Clubs. During the early development of the industry, they pushed the boundaries and possibilities of the health club sector. By ‘cutting my teeth’ in all aspects of the club operations from managing facilities, club launch and pre-sales and how to retain members, the understanding of customer and employee needs, and business drivers, was critical.

Prior to the founding of TLRfitness, for 16 years I worked within the commercial fitness sector for a leading global equipment manufacturer and supplier, in the remaining two years holding the position of Vice-President of Sales for EMEA. This enabled me to view the industry from the joint perspective of B2B and B2C, providing the opportunity to drive new trends to market, internally consult on product research and development, as well as manage international sales and marketing teams and campaigns across varying countries, cultures and levels of maturity in the industry.

Through my experience, I was able to consult on such factors as facility design, membership and operational strategies or simply being an empathetic ear for owners and operators from all countries and market sectors, which was always welcomed. By presenting and training teams to focus their business approach from the consumer/member perspective, yielded incredibly positive results.

Throughout my career, one factor remained constant, the need and will to increase the numbers who achieve the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

However, I was not looking after my own health. In Late 2019 I suffered what I though was ‘Corporate Burnout’. This led to anxiety and depression and a need for change.

My Story – Part 2

It soon became clear that I had lost my awareness of what really gave me personal fulfilment, energy and a drive for productivity.                                         The passion to uncover what led to, and the reason behind my burnout led me to develop TLRfitness so I could share my learnings with others.

Over what has been a long journey of reflection and learning, I have been able to rediscover myself, have great self-awareness and more importantly,  be able to develop a framework that allows others to benefit also.

The tools I now utilise, through my own training and accreditations, provide quantifiable feedback to provide support and help effect change. This is no longer specific to the Fitness Industry, but to all sectors. From an individual basis to large scale organisations.

Whether this is gaining an

  • an understanding of ‘Who you are’ and ‘What you do’ within the framework of the Resilient Leadership Elements, which provides  Clarity of Direction, Increased Awareness, Leadership Presence and an understanding of how to make more Resilient Decisions.
  • An understanding of your own behaviour or the make up of a team to allow for more effective communication or reduce stress triggers via the C-me Colour Profiling Tool.
  • Or by discovering what are your own true natural talents or those collectively within an organisation through the 6 Types of Working Genius.

Discovering the Working Genius’s within us all, to ensure that others avoid, what I believed was ‘Corporate Burnout’, but was actually no more than a loss of the ability to gain energy and joy from the areas I naturally thrived. Whilst contributing to great productivity of a team or organisation.

What drives me to behave like this?

I am confident there are many other stories out there which have a similar plot line. I am also sure there are many, whom will not have a part 2 within their story. However, to the latter. TLR is there just in case you don’t want to take the risk.

Hopefully this page has outlined why TLRfitness is such a key part of my life and at the foundation of everything that I do.

I am sure there will be a part 3 to my story at some stage, but I also hope that TLRfitness has an opportunity to help support and help contribute to at least an excerpt from a chapter of others stories as well.

I leave you with my mantra:

“I have the expertise to provide the vision, backed up by strategy, to allow others and myself to excel.”
